Few Connecticut towns had a bigger eighteenth century. Incorporated in 1651, Middletown grew during the 1700s into the largest and most prosperous settlement in Connecticut, and by the Revolution about a third of its residents made their living from trade and shipping; city status followed in 1784. The river explains it: the city lines the west bank of the Connecticut roughly 16 miles below Hartford, with the Mattabesset River along its northern edge. Main Street, the center of town life from the start, still keeps its nineteenth-century commercial blocks, now a historic district, and their storefronts hold shops and other local businesses.
Wesleyan University, founded in 1831, sits close to downtown, and the North End has had its own neighborhood group, the North End Action Team, since 1997. Westfield, once a separate village, is a mostly residential section in the northwest corner along the Cromwell line, and South Farms is a largely residential area just south of the center. Maromas, in the southeast, is mostly industrial; Pratt & Whitney opened an aircraft engine plant there in the 1960s.
