Long before it had its own name, the riverside here was a working port: by the mid-1700s Middletown Upper Houses traded along the coast and with the West Indies, and from the 1830s its wharves shipped brownstone. Seventy-two houses from that era and later still stand between Main Street and the river, almost half of them older than 1820, and together they form the Middletown Upper Houses Historic District. The settlement, laid out around 1650 on the west bank of the Connecticut, finally split from Middletown in 1851 and took the name Cromwell. Middletown is still its southern neighbor, with Rocky Hill above it and Berlin to the west.
Just inland, the Main Street Historic District takes in Valour Green and Memorial Green and buildings from 1750 to 1935. Industry left its mark too: the J. & E. Stevens Company, founded in 1843, grew into the country's largest maker of cast-iron toys, and A.N. Pierson's greenhouses became the largest commercial rose-growing business in the United States. The TPC River Highlands course has long hosted the Travelers Championship, a PGA Tour event, and Route 372 ties the town to I-91 and Route 9, with shopping centers such as Cromwell Square nearby.
