A flood around 1700 moved the Connecticut River's channel, and the village on its west bank grew into a riverport. That village is still readable along Old Main Street, where 232 historic buildings, most of them older than 1850, make up the Rocky Hill Center Historic District. Self-government came later: the area was Wethersfield's Stepney Parish from 1722 and only broke away as its own town in 1843. Wethersfield remains the neighbor to the north, Newington sits to the northwest, Berlin to the southwest and Cromwell to the south, and the river runs the length of the eastern side.
Dividend Brook and Dividend Pond powered the town's first industrial area, where shops turned out shears, chisels, hoes and horseshoes from 1667 into the early 1900s. Elm Street, laid out in the late 1600s as the road west from the ferry landing, still has its unusually wide colonial right-of-way and houses from 1769 to the 1930s. Industry has since moved toward I-91 and the Silas Deane Highway, with the Rocky Hill Industrial Park north of Old Forge Road.
At home, about 68 percent of Rocky Hill households own, slightly above the state rate, but only about 62 percent of homes are detached, below the state's 65 percent, so condos, townhouses and apartment complexes are a large part of the housing mix.
