    Old Wethersfield, Griswoldville and the streets beyond

    Wethersfield was settled in 1634 and incorporated in 1637, and it is one of the three original English settlements represented on Connecticut's flag. The Connecticut River runs along its eastern flank, while Hartford, Newington and Rocky Hill border it to the north, west and south. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the town was known for its red onions, and Comstock, Ferre & Company, founded here in 1820, is often called America's oldest continuously operating seed company.

    Old Wethersfield, listed on the National Register in 1970, holds the First Church of Christ's 1761 meeting house and the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum. Griswoldville grew up around mills from the 1680s and had its own chapel by 1872, and Wolcott Hill's farms gave way to houses in the twentieth century, as postwar developments such as Timber Village (1950) and Pyquag Village filled in the rest of town. Commercial life runs along the Silas Deane Highway and the Berlin Turnpike, and health care and retail are among the town's largest sectors by jobs.
