    From the Center to Elmwood and Westmoor

    West Hartford Center, known locally as "The Center," grew up around Farmington Avenue and Main Street, and Blue Back Square added a mixed-use district beside it in 2007. Health care and retail are among the town's biggest industries by jobs, and Westfarms, a shopping mall that opened in 1974, adds more than 1.3 million square feet of retail space.

    Beyond the Center, Elmwood is the town's more industrial and diverse neighborhood, Bishops Corner and Park Road have their own commercial clusters, and Westmoor is another of the town's named neighborhoods. The University of Hartford, the University of Saint Joseph and the American School for the Deaf are all here as well. West Hartford was also the first municipality in Connecticut to enact zoning, back in 1924.
