    Avon's villages, hills and river valley

    Avon sits in the Farmington Valley, about 10 miles west of Hartford, with West Hartford along its eastern side. Talcott Mountain, part of the Metacomet Ridge, runs down the east side of town, and US Route 44 climbs over the stretch called Avon Mountain. The Farmington River runs north through town, passing close to Avon's center, with West Avon on its far side. Around them are suburban streets that cover Huckleberry Hill and Woodford Hill, along with the Buckingham neighborhood.

    Shopping centers line Route 44 and Route 202, the two main roads through town, and the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail passes through Avon as well. Avon Old Farms, a private boarding school for boys, is on Old Farms Road.
