Windsor Locks was part of Windsor until 1854, and it takes its name from the canal locks that opened in 1829 to carry boats around the Enfield Falls, the first large falls on the Connecticut River. The town sits on the river's west bank with Windsor to the south, and the land climbs from about 25 feet above sea level along Main Street to roughly 180 feet in the west. Industry grew up beside the canal: the Dexter business, founded here in 1767 as C.H. Dexter and Sons, stayed in town for 233 years, and the J.R. Montgomery mill made tinsel from 1871 to 1990.
The Montgomery mill, on a strip of land between the canal and the river, reopened as 160 apartments, part of an effort to bring homes back to a Main Street area that lost many older buildings to urban renewal. The town's railroad depot on Main Street dates to 1875. Transportation and warehousing and local government account for many of the town's jobs, and aerospace has deep roots: Hamilton Standard opened a propeller plant here in 1952, and the business later became part of Collins Aerospace. Bradley International Airport takes up a large share of the town's land.
